Founded in 1880 with an inaugural class of 53 students, the University of Southern California has grown into a world-class university poised at the edge of the American frontier and the Pacific Rim. USC serves as a major hub for academics, arts, culture, research and innovation, and its reach extends far beyond the city of Los Angeles. It welcomes students from more than 130 countries around the world, and campus life reflects the vibrancy and diversity of its global community.
Students thrive in interdisciplinary, learner-centered programs in which they are encouraged to tailor their program of study to their interests and goals. Opportunities to pursue original or faculty-led research are available as soon as the first year. Learning extends beyond the walls of the classroom, and students gain a deeper understanding of the world, through study abroad programs in 130 cities.
Most USC students live on or near the 229-acre University Park Campus and enjoy the intimate feel of a smaller liberal arts college, taking inspiration from the mix of traditional and modern architecture, or finding numerous green spaces in which to study or simply relax. Student Equity and Inclusion Programs nurture the exploration of identity while offering support and connection. Hundreds of student clubs and organizations allow students to hone leadership skills, engage in community service, explore professional interests and hobbies, or simply have fun. All students become members of the Trojan Family, now more than 480,000 strong, who help each other forge paths to success at USC—and beyond.
